Facebook unveils plan to create a new cryptocurrency - Libra
Global leaders have expressed alarm after Facebook unveiled plans to create a new cryptocurrency called Libra. It will be a stablecoin – a digital currency that doesn’t fluctuate much because it’s supported by established government-backed currencies and securities.
The social media giant announced plans on Tuesday (18/06/2019) to partner with some of the biggest names in payments and technology to launch the coin next year, leading to concerns over privacy and money laundering. According to the released white paper, the mission for Libra is "a simple global currency and financial infrastructure that empowers billions of people"
Bitcoin soared to a year-to-date high off the back of the announcement.
