I’ve had the pleasure of being in the CEO role for Resolve Software Group (RSG) for just over two and a half years now. Looking back one of the most important things we have done during that time is to articulate our mission and values. RSG has been around for 25 years and clearly, we have been doing something right, as long before my tenure we carved out a corner of the Enterprise Case Management world that has brought us significant success and a strong reputation with our customers. However if we truly wanted to scale, we would need some tools to help us get there:
A company’s mission statement should articulate its overall purpose, why does it exist and how does it contribute to the world? Without this, it’s very hard to decide if the strategy you are following or the goals you are working on are the right ones.
A company’s values represent how it wants to behave whilst travelling on that journey. Without these, you cannot be sure you are doing the right thing in the right way.
The whole of our company spent a great deal of our time putting these together a few years back. We bought into them as we felt that we owned them and created them as a team. The values, in particular, have become part of our DNA.
It was therefore with some caution that recently we set about reviewing them to ensure that they reflected the lessons we have learned since they were created. I’m happy to report that they held up well, and as a result, we have made only a minor tweak to our mission, and left our values as they were, but added a new one to help us on our growth journey…
Whist our headline mission “to become the de facto standard for case management” reflected our ambition, we have come to learn that we are really quite a special company when we come to apply our knowledge to a particular area. For us, that area is “government and regulated industries”. This extra clarification helps give us our identity and better qualifies our expertise.
With our values, we felt that we were missing a key ingredient that we would need as we move to the next stage of our journey. RSG is growing significantly at the moment, and a result it means we need to scale our team. In order to do that we need more leaders. That means empowering our team to take responsibility and “make the call” on key decisions. If we make a mistake then so be it. We grow from our mistakes and we become leaders from learning from those mistakes that we will inevitably make.
We believe that this extra value will help our team continue to grow with the company, and we will support them every step of the way.
As a result of our review, I’m pleased to present our updated mission and values:
